Burkina Faso: A Nation, We Think

The African nation of Burkina Faso used to be called Upper Volta. They had many hits under that name, including “Raspberry Volta” and “Upper Red Corvette.” But after a dispute with their record company in the mid-’90s, they changed their name to an unpronounceable symbol. But most people just started calling them The Nation Formerly Known As Upper Volta, so we’re not sure what the hell the damn point was.

Here are a few facts about Burkina Faso:

  • Burkina Faso is completely landlocked. They’re like the Nebraska of Africa or something.
  • As the Nebraska of Africa, Burkina Faso is basically nothing but corn and Bright Eyes records.
  • And as the Nebraska of Africa, Burkina Faso is home to the massive insurance company, Mutual of Ouagadougou.
