The Milky Way: A Space Thing

The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains our solar system. Our solar system is located way out on the far edge of the Milky Way; so if the center of the Milky Way was New York City, we’d be like,  a suburb of Spokane or some shit.

Our galaxy gets it name from the ancient Greeks, who thought it looked like a great, milky trail across the sky. Unfortunately, the name “Great Cum Stain In The Sky” was taken (a myth involving Zeus you REALLY don’t want to hear), so it got the name Milky Way instead.

The Milky Way contains over 200 billion stars, of which our Sun is just one. The universe contains over 200 billion galaxies, of which the Milky Way is merely one. Feeling small and insignificant yet? Personally, we were already feeling pretty small and insignificant, but this just pushed us over the edge. We’re just going to go home, sit in the dark eating several pints of Ben & Jerry’s, and go to bed until like, next February. We cannot get into a position that’s fetal enough. Urgh.
