Costa Rica: Nation-ly

Costa Rica (the name is French for “my uncle’s toasteroven”) is located in Central America, smack dab in the middle of the western hemisphere’s Midwest.

And like our own Midwest, Costa Rica is decidedly out of fashion. People wear clothes from the 1978 JC Penney catalog (plaid three-piece suits are huge. Literally). Hardee’s is considered fine dining–be sure to try the 2/3 lb. Monster Thickburger® (unless, of course, you enjoy having arteries). Men and women alike sport mullets (and those little stubbly goatees). Popular TV shows in Costa Rica include wrestling, wrestling, Hillbilly Handfishin’, and wrestling.

And like the American band Kansas, there was an inexplicably popular band called Costa Rica in the 1970s that played turgid prog-rock with ponderous lyrics; even right now, Costa Rican high school students are toking up in their car listening to Costa Rica’s huge hit “El Dusto de la Winda” on eight track. Brings back memories, doesn’t it?
